What the variance is worth

60 units missing at an average $38 is $2,280 that the accounts still think is on the shelf. The sheet works the units and the money together, because the unit figure argues with the counter and the money figure argues with the bookkeeper.

Where the wrong lines are

39 lines did not match and they are 1.5 units adrift each on the worked example. A small average across many lines is a process problem, usually receipts or returns never booked; a large average on few lines is usually one bin nobody has counted properly.
