Automotive parts inventory software earns its keep at one moment: the point where the shelf has fallen far enough that you order, and not so far that the customer waits. This sheet works that point from four figures you already know. Enter the units of a part you sell in a week, your supplier's lead time in days, the days of safety cover you want and the units on the shelf now, and it returns the daily usage, what you will sell while the order is in transit, the safety stock at that cover, the reorder point itself, the days of cover you are holding today and how far above the reorder point you are. On the worked example, 12 units a week with a seven day lead and five days of cover gives a reorder point of 21 units, and 30 on the shelf is 17 days of cover with 9 units of headroom. The cover is your call: this sheet publishes no rule about how much risk a back order is worth.
The lead time is the part you cannot control
12 units a week is 1.7 a day, so a seven day lead time means 12 units go out while the order is in transit. That figure is the floor under any reorder point, and it moves the moment the supplier's lead time moves.
Cover is the part you choose
Five days of cover adds 9 units on the worked example, making the reorder point 21. More cover means fewer back orders and more cash on the shelf. The sheet asks for the number rather than assuming one, because the trade-off is yours and this site publishes no rule.
Where the shelf stands today
30 units on hand against a reorder point of 21 is 9 units of headroom and 17 days of cover. Negative headroom means the order is already late, which is the single most useful thing a reorder point can tell you.

How much safety cover should I hold?
That is a judgement about your supplier and your customers, not arithmetic, so the sheet asks rather than assumes. A supplier who is reliably next-day needs little; one who is a week late twice a quarter needs enough cover to survive the late week without a back order.
Does this work for a part that sells irregularly?
Less well, and it is honest to say so. The reorder point assumes usage is roughly steady week to week. For a part that sells four in one week and none for two months, the reorder point it returns is an average that will over-stock you, and the dead stock sheet is the more useful one.
What is headroom?
The units between what is on the shelf now and the reorder point. Positive means you have time; negative means the shelf is already below the point and the order is late.
